Post Race continued
After that she kept telling me to just take it a mile at a time. She said "this mile is special because after this you will be on 22, then that mile is special because you will be on 23, and so on." Then after that she said something that was what makes this story so awesome. She said, "Just remember why you are running this race. Marathons are painful and you want to quit, but it doesn't even compare to going through chemo." After hearing that from her, I ran the rest of the race without walking. I will never forget that conversation I had with her. Very inspirational. I tried to find her after the race, but didn't.
I got to mile 25 and that is when the fans were on the side of the road cheering and it was awesome. When I was at about 25.75 miles, my Team in Training coach came to bring me across the finish line. At this point, I was digging as deep as I could and giving it everything I had. If you look at the pictures, you will see one where they captured the pain I was going through at the end.
I got to the last .2 miles and I looked over and saw my aunt yelling my name with a sign that read "Go Adam." Then, I heard the song Starships by Nikki Minaj playing. My teammates know that song gets me pumped up, so it was very fitting as I crossed the finish line. Once I crossed the line, I had a huge smile on my face. It was such an awesome feeling and awesome atmosphere.
My legs are still pretty sore even 2 days after the race, but it was more than worth it. I am so glad I decided to experience this with Team in Training. I will be continuing to do events with Team in Training. I met a lot of great people that I hope to keep in contact with.
Thank you, again, to everyone who helped me in this journey by donating and also just all of the support from everyone and all the congratulations.
Also, to Matthew and the others I ran for: there were over 24,000 people running at the event. We were all running because we are inspired by you. We ran to help fight cancer. Just know that you are heroes and you are inspiring people every day. Also know, that you have a lot of people that are happy to support you in any way they can.
I would also encourage anyone to join Team in Training for an event. You will not regret it. They have all kinds of events you can do and it is a great experience. Let me know if you would like more information.
Thank you again. I have posted this before, but I love this quote from John Wooden. You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.
Get out there and do something good for someone. Big or small, they will appreciate it more than you may ever know. Please also keep Matthew and others in your thoughts and prayers. He is in his marathon right now and needs the support to help him win that race.

Post Race
Well, I just got back from San Francisco, so I thought I would give a little recap about my experience this past weekend.
The weekend started early Friday morning as we boarded the plane from Des Moines. We arrived in Denver on time and shortly boarded the plane to head to San Francisco. Again , the flight was smooth and on time. I spent the afternoon relaxing and waiting for my family to arrive. They arrived in the evening, so we went out to eat, hung out for a bit and then decided to call it a night.
Saturday morning, I decided to go for a little jog to stretch out my legs and clear my head a bit. I ended up jogging some of the crazy hills of San Fran and decided to cut it short so I didn't wear my legs out. For lunch, we had the Inspiration Dinner. This was a very cool event. We ate and then there were a couple speakers. The first speaker was a guy who lost his wife to cancer and he is very active with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society because he promised himself he would do whatever he could, so people didn't have to go through what his wife did. He has ran 50+ marathons and calls himself the back of the pack man. He is all about enjoying the experience and had a lot of jokes about being one of the slow runners.
The next speaker was a cancer survivor. She had a great story about her experience. The day of the marathon was actually the 4 year anniversary of the day she found out she had cancer and she was going to complete her first half marathon. She was very inspiring.
After that, they announced the top fundraisers and the very top fundraiser was a lady in our group from Central Iowa. She is very dedicated to Team in Training and she is also a survivor herself. She raised over $40,000 by herself. I was in awe when I heard that amount.
After that, the family and I went on a bus tour of the city, walked across the bridge, and went to eat. Then, we went in search of my pre-race breakfast. I like to eat peanut butter on bread or toast before I go run and we had a little trouble finding peanut butter. I finally decided I was just eat something else, but my mom and my brother were determined that I was going to get my peanut butter and they came back to the hotel with a jar of it. That made that peanut butter sandwich extra special. We hung out in the hotel for a bit and then I decided it was time to get some sleep.
I was very surprised on how well I actually did sleep. I got a good night's sleep and woke up about 15 minutes before my alarm went off. I took a quick shower, ate my breakfast, and got all ready. Then, it was time to head down to the lobby to meet the team. After a few pre-race pictures, we headed out to the start. The start was a block down from out hotel. It was so awesome to walk out of the hotel and see a swarm of people. I had a little trouble finding where I was supposed to be at first, but finally found it. I was just looking around in amazement. There was a guy standing next to me and I looked at him and said, "Never miss an opportunity to run with 20,000 women in San Fran." He thought that comment was hilarious and he said it was his 4th time running the half there.
Then, the race began. When I started running, I just got a big smile on my face because it was just awesome to be experiencing it. The first part of the race was pretty slow because there were so many people packed around you. We couldn't have asked for better weather and it was really cool to run around the city and see the sights as you are running.
I felt great from the start. My IT band pain popped up in mile 3 for about a mile or 2 and ironically went away after that and it never bothered me again. I don't understand that at all, but I am very thankful for that. We got to mile 6 and there was a huge hill. I have never ran on a hill like that before. Then, after that you had to go down, which was almost worse than going up. After that it was relatively flat until I believe mile 10 or so. I just kept on running and enjoying the sights. Every once in a while, I just found myself randomly smiling because it was just so awesome.
I think it was about mile 18 and I finally took my first break to walk. That was farther than I thought I would go without walking. After that, it was just fighting through it.
I think the coolest story of the whole trip happened to me on mile 21 or so. I ran alongside this lady from Pennsylvania. She told me this was her 58th marathon and she recently did a 50 mile run over in Switzerland. She has ran in all 50 states and was telling me about Des Moines and how she really enjoyed it.

The time has come
This is it people. Tomorrow morning at 6 AM, I will be boarding the plane to San Francisco. The time has finally come. I am starting to get a little nervous, but I think once we get there and I have some time to relax and go to the inspiration dinner, I will get excited and confidence and adrenaline will take over.
I have spent the last couple weeks resting and taking it easy on my leg. I got a massage the other day and she also showed me a few stretches I should do. I have been icing, sretching, and using my foam roller a lot. I have a little more confidence in my leg than I did before, but those feelings might change at mile 16 or so on Sunday.
Last night I took the time to write the names of people I am running for on my jersey. I have 4 individuals other than Matthew that I will be running for. Two of them are battling cancer right now and two of them I will be running in their memory.
I want to thank everyone for all of your support, whether it be donations to LLS or just words of encouragement. Also, I want to thank family and friends who are planning to come out to support me on race day. For anyone who has been in a race and had people cheering you on, you know how much that helps.
Matthew, I will do my whatever I can to cross that finish line for you, buddy.
I am guessing this will be my last post until after the race. I am hoping to take a lot of pictures to share. I am really looking forward to this. I honestly think this could be one of the greatest experiences of my life so far. Thanks again to everyone who has helped along the way.

20 mile run
I am watching the movie "Spirit of the Marathon" right now and realized I never posted about my latest training run. I ran Sunday because Rachel, my usual running partner, could not make it on Saturday and I always run a lot better with her because we are about the same pace. When I went to my car to leave, there was frost on the roof, which did not give me the greatest feeling. We got started and it was still only about 35 degrees. It slowly warmed up as time went on. The first 10 miles or so were great and actually faster than my expected pace. At 16 miles, I was still feeling fairly good, but after that my knee was really starting to act up. For the remainder of the run, it was strictly fighting through pain. I could barely walk at the end.
I am pretty sure I have an IT band, so I have been focusing on stretching, icing, elevating, etc. I even did something I told myself I would never do and consult a chiro. I went for a short run today and it didn't feel too bad after I got going, so I think if I continue my stretching and take care of it, I should be fine come race day. It's time to really dig deep and be a fighter. I am running to honor Matthew and he is a fighter, so I need to do the same.
The Des Moines Register did a little piece on Matthew this week and talked about the benefit motorcycle ride that is happening this weekend. I am still looking for some bicyclists to start with me at the start. I still have not mapped out a route, but we can figure that out that morning. I am looking forward to the event.
This movie is starting to make this whole thing real. I am getting very anxious to get out there and do this thing. There are only a few weeks left. Thanks to everyone for supporting Team in Training. It is a great organization and I plan to continue this in the future with various events.

Bone Marrow Donor
It has been a while since I have posted anything. The main reason I am posting is because I received some good news the other day. In July at our golf tournament, we had Nancy Webb come and register people for the bone marrow donor registration and I was one of those who registered. I thought it would be so awesome if I could help someone that needs it. Well, on Tuesday I got a call from them and I am a possible match for someone. The first thing I asked was the time frame because I have done all of this training for the marathon and that would be a decision I would have to make if the operation would be in the next month. But, she assured me that it would be at least 2 months before they would need me, so fortunately I would be able to do both. They asked me a series of questions and said they would contact me sometime before the middle of November to let me know if I was the chosen donor. I just thought it was really cool that I could be the one chosen to help someone who is in need. Someone introduce me once to a quote by John Wooden and it has always stuck with me and I think it is great. John Wooden said, "You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."
As I have mentioned before, I am running in honor of Matthew Barker in October. Recently, they had a day at Adventureland with a lot of friends and family. You can follow Matthew at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/matthewbarker or visit the Facebook Page "A Miracle for Matthew." It was awesome to read about their trip to Adventureland and see all the pictures and all the support Matthew has. I also just found out they are going to be doing an article about Matthew and his family in the Des Moines Register since September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. It is apparent that Matthew's family is strong and they continue to stay strong through all of this. It is also neat to see all of the people coming together to support Matthew and his family.
Speaking of coming together...on September 29th, they are doing the Matthew Barker Benefit Ride. They are riding motorcycles to different destinations throughout the day. Since I don't have a motorcycle, but am a cyclist, I thought it would be cool to get a group together to ride our bikes on part of the route. I do not yet have a route planned, but we could always just figure that out the day of the event. Pass the word along to your cycling friends. The event starts at 11 at the Chicken Coop in Urbandale, which is right down the road from Grimes.
Sorry, somewhat of a long post today. We are getting close to the big day. If anyone is still wanting to support me and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, please visit my fundraising page at http://pages.teamintraining.org/ia/nikesf12/anederhoff
Thanks to everyone and have a great rest of the week.

Park to Park
To follow my 20 mile run this past week, the weekly long run this week went down to 10 miles. Instead of that, I decided to sign up for the Park to Park Half Marathon in Waterloo. I was supposed to run this race last year, but my surgery prevented that from happening. I have heard a lot of good things about the race, so I wanted to give it a try. It was a great morning for a race. It was a little chilly at the start, but warmed up enough during the race to make it almost perfect race weather. The course was flat. I am really glad I decided to do this race. I felt great throughout the whole race and got back to a time that I want to be at. It gave me a much needed confidence boost. I have been getting frustrated with some of my runs lately, but yesterday really helped out.
That should be my last race until the big one in October. It is just a little more than a month away. This next weekend is a 12 mile run and then the next week is the other 20 mile run. I am looking forward to doing the rest of the runs with other Team in Training members. Because of the craziness of summer and other races, I have not been to a group run in quite some time. The groups runs really help me to push myself, so it should be a good way to round out my training.
Also, when I got back to Des Moines, I had the opportunity to work at the Miracle League Field with the Kiwanis. I encourage you to check it out. It is an awesome opportunity for children with special needs to play baseball. I had to miss most of the Iowa, Iowa State game, but it was well worth it. It was awesome to see the joy on those kids face when they hit the ball and started down the basepath. They are also building a new Miracle League Park in Ankeny and break ground on September 26th. I am hoping to get more involved with the Miracle League.
Also, after some conversation with the guys I did the Hy Vee Tri with, we have decided that we are going to try to get signed up for an Ironman in 2013. We had some fellow Love Shackers do one in Wisconsin today and they have been our inspiration. I watched Steve cross the finish line online and am currently watching to see Ellen cross. I am very proud of my teammates. They have worked really hard for this day. I am looking forward to start my training for that after my marathon.
Thanks to everyone following my blog. Keep up the prayers for the ones who need it.
Make this coming week a great one.

Hy Vee Triathlon
Well, I survived the Hy Vee Triathlon. There were 3 of us Love Shack teammates participating and another teammate spectating. We started the day at about 4:30 and headed down to Gray's Lake to set up our transition area. Trying to park the car was crazy, so we hopped out and started walking and Lyle took the car to park it. After we got the transition all set up, we had to wait a little for our swim to start. This gave us a chance to watch some of the elite athletes take off. We got into the water and the 1500 meter swim for me was a struggle to put it very mildly. I am not a strong swimmer and my swimming training was very very limited. It got to the point where I was just swimming kayak to kayak so I could rest. I had one of the slowest swim times of the day, but I got through it.
When I got out of the water, I had a little trouble getting to the transition area because the swim took a lot out of me. Once I got on my bike for the 25 mile ride I felt great. The bike portion is by far my strongest leg of the triathlon. The bike course was pretty fast. It was fairly flat and didn't have challenging hills. This gave me a chance to regain my strength a little bit to prepare for the run.
Once I got off the bike it was time for the 6.2 mile run. I started out a little slower than my normal pace in hopes that I could pick it up towards the end. That really didn't happen. I was pretty slow the whole run. The run course was not bad, but I was just a little tired from the swim and bike. I did pick it up towards the end. It was awesome when you get close to the finish line and you step on the blue carpet and see all the people watching. One awesome thing was when I saw a fellow Grimes Chamber member and he yelled my name. That really helped me to push it to the finish. Then right after that they announced my name on the loudspeaker and that really gets you going. So, I finished strong and I almost fell over after I crossed the line, but it felt great.
Overall, it was a very humbling, but awesome experience. I have decided that after I get done with my marathon in October, I will probably start doing more triathlons. I really enjoy them and it gives you a variety of training, so you aren't just running all the time.
Now, I am about a month and half away from my marathon. Yesterday gave me a little motivation to start training a little harder. I am really looking forward to continuing my training and enjoying the 26.2 mile "party" to celebrate my training being over. Thanks again to everyone has supported me so far and continue to support me in my efforts with Team in Training.
I want to thank my fellow teammates for being there for my support. It's awesome to have those people with you to keep you going and it makes it a lot more fun.

Beeds Lake Half Marathon
On the training schedule for yesterday was a 12 mile run. Last week I was talking to someone and they said they were going to run the 1/2 marathon at Beeds Lake in Hampton. I ran that race last year and really enjoyed it, so I decided to sign up for it as it would be good for my training. I also recruited a few of my fellow Team Love Shack members to join.
The course this year was different than last year. They loaded us on a bus and hauled us over to the start of the race at a nearby town. From there we ran on the new bike trail that was covered in crushed gravel. I was not happy about that at first, but the trail was actually really nice to run on. From there we turned on to the blacktop where we did a loop and ended up back at the lake for the finish line.
It was a little different than most races because it seemed like most of the race I was running by myself. I seem to run a lot better when I am surrounded by people. My time was not the best, but I was treating it as a training run and I got through it, so it was a success. As I got close to the finish line I kept thinking to myself that in October, that finish line would be my halfway point. It is somewhat scary when I think of it, but I am looking forward to the challenge and running in honor of Matthew and other cancer patients and survivors.
Team Love Shack represented the race well. We had 5 1/2 team members race (1 member is still a half because he is still in Love Shack initiation and he only ran the 10K, but he did place 2nd, so maybe should be 3/4). We even had one teammate who finished his first 1/2 marathon ever and he had very minimal training. It is always fun to go to these events as a team knowing that when you cross the finish line you have people there cheering you on.
As I always mention, keep up the thoughts and prayers. Thanks for the support. Thanks also to everyone who has donated to the cause. There is still time to help out. Contact me or visit my fundraising page for more details. Any donation of any amount is appreciated and goes to help the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and their efforts to treat and cure.

Prayers Needed
Matthew's mother posted this on the Miracle For Matthew Facebook page:
"An update on Matthew:
Matthew finished his last chemotherapy treatment for Interim Maintenance I and will have a few weeks off. On September 7 he begins Delayed Intensification and it will be a rough 8 weeks just in time for school starting. This phase will be intense and will cause nausea, low blood counts, and risk of fevers and infections. It is very possible that he will end up in the hospital and will have to have blood transfusions. So, keep us in your prayers that he will get through it."
Please continue to pray for Matthew and his family as well as anyone else who is suffering. Also remember the families who are suffering because of a loss of a loved one. Death of a loved one is never easy and a little prayer or kind words can go along way.
Thanks to everyone for the support and prayers. Keep it up and have a good rest of the week.

Panther Pride Triathlon
I can now check off another thing off my bucket list. I finished my first triathlon Saturday. I participated in the Panther Pride Triathlon at Ellsworth College in Iowa Falls. The swim was very tough as expected, but surprisingly my time was a little better than I expected. The bike ride went well aside from having to stop for a leg cramp. I am actually a little disappointed with the time of my run, but I finished it and had a blast doing it. I think it is safe to say that is not the only tri I will do.
When I got back, I decided to meet up with the riders doing the Sweet Corn Ride. I left my house to try and meet up with them in Redfield. I got about halfway between Adel and Redfield and that is where I found the crew. I had a good time and put on another 50 miles. I rode back home about 20 miles in the dark and, for once, did not get lost :) Maybe I am finally starting to get familiar with the trails around here.
Since I did the tri yesterday, I had to postpone my weekend training run until today. On the agenda is a 16 mile run. My legs are a little sore from yesterday, but I am going to try and fight through it. I'm just glad it is somewhat cool today.
Hope everyone else had a good weekend. Make this coming week a good one. As always, please remember to keep the people suffering in your thoughts and prayers.

Golf Tournament and Training Run
Another weekend has passed. In my last post, I said I was going to attend the Treye Blythe Golf Tournament. That was on Friday and what a great day that was. The event, as always, was a great success. The tournament raised great money that was donated to many local organizations. It is just awesome to see so many people come together for this every year. It was also great to see people I don't get to see very often.
Saturday, I was scheduled to run 12 miles for my training run. I got a late start and got soaked by rain. My friend Kevin saw me and gave me a ride at about mile 8. Later on, I went swimming with my friend Ben, who is going to be doing the same triathalon as me this coming weekend. I really struggle with swimming, but I think I can get through it.
Sunday, I relaxed most of the day and later in the evening, I decided I should go for another run since I did not get my run finished on Saturday. I contemplated just resting, but anytime I get those thoughts in my head, I remember why I am running the marathon in October. My run felt pretty good and I was glad I talked myself into doing it.
This week will be a lot of getting ready for the triathalon on Saturday and I will have to plan my weekly long run for Sunday again.
I hope everyone has a good week and please remember to keep those being affected by cancer or other illnesses in your thoughts and prayers.
Also, a big thank you to anyone who has donated so far. If you have not donated yet and are able to, please visit my page. Any donation is appreciated by the LLS.

Good News
I am taking my lunch and noticed a post on Facebook, so I wanted to get a quick post in.
This is a post from Matthew's Mom's Facebook page:
"It looks like Matthew will be going home this morning. They took him off his pain meds and food supply. He is now eating small portions, but nevertheless eating. They admininstered his chemo treatment of Vincristine and Methotrexate this afternoon that he should have gotten Monday, but they gave him 2 hours of fluids before and 4 hours afterwards. They wanted to do it in the hospital to make sure he can still take the chemo without another mouth sore outbreak. His counts all look good. His blood pressure is still high at times, so he will remain on BP meds for awhile. He was feeling his spunky self today and is ready to be home. We all are ready to be home! Thanks everyone for your prayers and good thoughts!!"
I signed my recommittment papers and registration for the marathon in October, so I am officially all in. I also ordered an orange Nike bandana yesterday that I will be customizing to honor Matthew while I run.
I also let some people talk me into registering for something I have never done before, a sprint triathlon. I am not worried about the biking and running, but I haven't been in a pool in years. So, I went and swam a few laps yesterday and the swim is going to be a struggle to say the least. But, you never want to miss an opportunity to try something new :)
Tomorrow is the annual Treye Blythe golf tournament in Ackley. I am excited to go back to see people I have not seen in a while. This is a big event that always raises great money for local charities. My parents will also be hosting the family they got to know on their mission trip to the Dominican Republic, so I look forward to meeting them as well.
Hope everyone has a good weekend. Please remember to keep Matthew and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

RAGBRAI
I just completed my second year of RAGBRAI with Team Love Shack. It was a little different this year as we had some team members missing and some leave early. We started the week with 13 on the bus and we ended the week with 6. The first few days were very, very hot. A few of us did the extra loop to make Tuesday a 100 mile day. That was a challenge as there were 2 hills on the loop that were killers. I think someone said it was the 3rd or 4th toughest loop ever. The next day I wasn't feeling so good. I think it was a combination of lack of sleep, the heat, and not enough water. I ended up getting a good night's sleep that night and rode the bus for the next half day. After that I felt great and was able to finish out the week. It was my goal to do every single mile of the ride including the loop, but I'm glad I sat out the half day for my health.
I'm not sure how many of you out there have done RAGBRAI, but last year and this year and have been 2 of the most memorable weeks of my life. I am fortunate enough to have been invited to be a part of Team Love Shack. I couldn't ask for a better group of people. The last night we stayed at my Uncle and Aunt's house in Fulton, IL and they kept talking about how great of a group of people the team is. It is crazy how you can spend one week with a group of people and they become some of your best friends and almost like a second family to you. I also met a lot of new people that I hope to keep in touch with to bike and run with. I'm sure most of you are surprised by that since I am such a shy person ;)
Although I am sad to have the week come to an end, I am excited about my next adventure. As many of you know, I started running about 2 years ago. At that time I was so out of shape and pretty overweight and needed to do something about it, so like Forrest Gump I just started runnin'. I signed up for a 5k to start and then gradually moved up. Last year I ran a couple half marathons and this year I have done a couple. My goal last year was to run a marathon, but my surgery prevented it from happening. So, I made that my goal for 2012. Then, I was invited to be a part of Team in Training with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I have a mission to raise money for the LLS and run a marathon in honor and memory of people have been or are being affected by cancer. I thought this was a great opportunity to run for something meaningful. I am about halfway to my goal at this point and the race is in October. Right now I am putting myself in training mode.
One thing I am excited about is to be running for a young guy who lives right here in Grimes. He was diagnosed with Leukemia in May. I learned about him when I bought a bracelet that they were selling to raise money at the Grimes summer festival. I have connected with his family through Facebook and they thought that might lift up his spirits a little. I am planning to get a headband made to wear for the race with his name on it. Also, I am going to get custom shoes made through NikeID, which I am hoping he will be able to help me design. I can't imagine what it would be like to be 8 years old (or any age) and have to go through that, so I want to do what I can to help. I wish I could do more to help, but I think this is a good way to use my ability.
I will keep you updated on this journey. If you want to know more about my efforts, you can visit http://pages.teamintraining.org/ia/nikesf12/anederhoff.
